Heritage Open Day – Amazing Innovations – Weaving – Saturday 17 September 2022
17 September 2022 @ 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM BST
FreeHeptonstall Museum, a Grade II-listed building dates back to 1600. Built as a warehouse. It was converted to a grammar school in 1771 and closed in 1889. The Yorkshire Penny Bank occupied it 1898 until 1954, and it became a museum on 11 August 1972.
Currently mid-community asset transfer. Friends of Heptonstall Museum have created a unique opportunity to visit the museum, which has been closed to the public since 2019.
Celebrating alongside our Calderdale Valley neighbour organisations, our theme of ‘Astounding Innovations’ will focus on Heptonstall’s history as a centre for hand-loom weaving. The Museum is currently home to a beautifully preserved, original 16th century, working loom.
‘The Hebden Weaver’ will be talking about the traditions of weaving techniques – using local fleeces, demonstrating a hand loom, spinner wheels and carding tools. There will also be an opportunity to witness tapestry weaving all taking place in the atmospheric, main museum room.
Refreshments and further information regarding the future plans for the Museum’s planned reopening in Spring 2023 will be available.
