Ted Hughes’ Birthday Celebration
17 August 2023 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM BST

The Elmet Trust invites you to join our shared reading event to celebrate Ted Hughes’s poems set in and around Heptonstall on what would have been his 93rd birthday.
It will be an informal birthday gathering at Heptonstall Museum, where we will meet to discuss Hughes’s legacy in Heptonstall whilst enjoying a cup of tea and a slice of birthday cake.
If you have a copy of Remains of Elmet (1979), Elmet (1984) or Collected poems (2003) please bring it along with you – we will begin the evening with a discussion of three of our favourite Heptonstall-based poems; Heptonstall Old Church, Wind and Dick Straightup.
Please do bring along your own favourite Heptonstall poems too. We really hope this will be a collaborative event where partygoers feel they can read and respond personally, sharing feelings, thoughts and memories provoked by the different poems and discussions. Of course, everyone is not expected to read aloud or speak – it’s also fine to just listen.
Donations invited on the evening for tea & cake – £3.00
