Those Cragg Vale Coiners!
25 April 2024 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM BST
Free – £5.00
Continuing our monthly History @ Heptonstall talks, in April, we welcome renowned local historian, David Glover talking about our favourites, the Cragg Vale Coiners, this time with a little added coin toss to the story recently unearthed …
This is the tale of how an enterprising group of men in the Calder Valley area set up a counterfeiting operation in the 1760s, which would ultimately lead to the murder of local exciseman William Deighton, engaged in tracking them down. Who sought justice for him, and how did bodies come to be hung in chains on Beacon Hill above Halifax? A story recently brought to life vividly by Steve Hartley, through Ben Myers’ gripping novel ‘The Gallows Pole’ and the resulting BBC TV series. Last year David uncovered fresh information about the involvement of a certain local ironmonger, who inherited The Coiners’ ‘stamp’, which detail will be included.
