A Fresh Lick of History: Heptonstall Museum Welcomes Visitors Back

Following an extended winter of works, we are delighted to finally move forward with re-opening Heptonstall Museum now planned for the end of May 2026.

Initially reopening in 2023, the charity welcomed thousands to experience the previous exhibition – “Criminal Coiners: Life and Death in Wild West Yorkshire”, immersing them in the true story of Calder Valley’s most notorious historic characters, the Cragg Vale Coiners. A natural choice, having been commissioned during lockdown as a centre-stage location as ‘Barbs Pub’ for filming of Shane Meadows’ BBC serialised adaption of Ben Myers’  ‘The Gallows Pole’.

The intriguing history of Heptonstall stretches as far back as 13 century records. Fresh interpretations; newly-discovered personal histories are all explored through an eclectic collection of fascinating objects.  All within the surroundings of its beautiful Grade II listed building, which dates back to the 17c.  The new exhibition has been drawn together with input from Culturedale-funded workshops and a cohort of volunteers and researchers.

We are also looking to appoint a Museum Coordinator on a part-time basis, to help with day-to-day support in the operation of the museum, including its popular gift shop.

Tim Machin, Chair said:

“The museum is at a major turning point, with the coiner’s exhibition removed, the welcome return of some favourite fixtures including the Schoolmasters’ Chair.  We’ve proven that the museum is not only valued, but truly viable, but we recognise the need to make changes to successfully operate the museum in the long term. We welcome interest from new trustees and the addition of a part-time paid role will really offer significant help us open this exciting next chapter.”
